from Gauzelin, a Norman name built on the tribal name of the Gauts; it arrived in England as a man's name, spent centuries as a surname, and returned in the 20th century as a girls' name with a soft French finish

The story
Jocelyn crossed to England with the Normans as a man's name, from the Germanic Gauzlin, which most scholars read as a tribal name, of the Geats, though some hear joy in it; the truth is genuinely contested. Over the centuries it softened, and by the twentieth it had become a girls' name almost everywhere. Its most remarkable bearer is Jocelyn Bell Burnell, the astrophysicist who, as a graduate student in 1967, noticed a faint, impossibly regular pulse buried in miles of telescope chart paper and so discovered pulsars, the spinning cores of dead stars. The Nobel Prize for the discovery went to senior colleagues, an omission scientists still argue about; she has since collected nearly every other honor physics can give. In American records Jocelyn climbed patiently for decades, reaching its strongest stretch in the 2000s, and it remains a quietly confident choice, a name with a signal in it.
