Meaning

“Roman family name, possibly linked to Jove”

The story

Julius comes from the gens Julia, one of the oldest patrician houses of ancient Rome. Roman writers tied the name either to the Greek ioulos, downy-bearded, or to the god Jupiter, and the family itself claimed descent from Julus, a son of Aeneas. Its most famous bearer, Gaius Julius Caesar, left a mark that outlived the empire: the month of July still carries his name, and the royal titles Kaiser and Tsar both trace back to it. That is a remarkable afterlife for three short syllables. In the United States Julius reads more current now than it has in generations, carried back into fashion on the same wave that revived Roman classics like Atticus and Augustus. It is old, but it does not feel dated, and it hands a child an emperor, a calendar month, and a certain unbothered gravity.
