Meaning
family brightness (家輝); given name of actor Tony Leung Ka-fai. A Hong Kong ID card carries both names at once (Tony LEUNG Ka-fai): the English name for school and work, the Cantonese name for family and the record
The story
Ka-Fai reads in this collection as family brightness, 家輝, and it belongs to one half of a famous Hong Kong name collision. Tony Leung Ka-fai is a five-time winner of the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor, and because he is often confused with Tony Leung Chiu-wai, the industry settled it with nicknames: Ka-fai is Big Tony, Chiu-wai is Little Tony, after their respective ages and statures. He went to France to appear in Jean-Jacques Annaud's The Lover, from the Marguerite Duras novel. The collision itself is the lesson: an English name plus a shared surname can blur two careers, and the Cantonese given name is what keeps them distinct. The records agree, one Ka-fai, one Chiu-wai, no confusion in characters. In American birth records the name is absent; in Hong Kong film credits it is unmistakable.

Not on the Montevideo record for 1940 to 2011: that registry withholds nothing, so this spelling was not given there in those years. Not on the France record: nametree keeps spellings that reached 20 births in some year, so rarer uses are not shown. Not on the South Australia record for 1944 to 2017: that registry withholds nothing, so this spelling was not given there in those years. Not on the Austria record for 1984 to 2025: Statistik Austria publishes every first name down to a single birth, so this name was not given there in those years (before 2010 the record covers babies with Austrian citizenship only). Not on Norway’s list: Statistics Norway lists only first names carried by 200 or more living people, so rarer names are not shown.
