Meaning
surname/place name, "narrow road"
The story
Lane is the narrow road as a name, an English surname for whoever lived along one, and its American record shows two separate builds. The first was midcentury and modest: about 1,200 in the 1940s rising to 2,700 in the 1960s, then easing. The second was steep: about 7,700 in the 1990s, tripling from the 1980s, the exact years after a bull rider named Lane became rodeo's most mourned figure and then a film. Decade buckets point, they do not convict. The climb continued through about 13,000 in the 2010s, with 8,800 so far this decade. In our records it goes to boys about 47,600 to 4,600. One syllable, a place underfoot, and none of the flash of the surname wave around it: Lane is the rare road name that feels less like traffic and more like the way home.
