Peyton is an English place name, Paega's town, that spent centuries as a surname before American parents heard first-name music in it. It stayed scarce in United States records for most of the twentieth century, then began climbing in the late 1980s and 1990s, right as Peyton Manning was becoming the most famous Peyton alive: the quarterback with a surgeon's precision who won five MVP awards and Super Bowls with two different teams, barking audibles that made Omaha a national punchline. We cannot prove the connection, but the name's steepest climb tracks his playing career almost season by season. Along the way Peyton became one of the era's true unisex names, now given to girls even more often than boys, and it crested in the 2010s before easing only slightly. A quiet English surname that ended up with a spiral in its arc.
