Lazaro
Meaning
“Spanish and Portuguese form of Lazarus, from Hebrew for 'God has helped'”
The story
Lazaro, the Spanish and Portuguese form of Lazarus, goes back through Greek to the Hebrew Eleazar, God has helped, and to the man from Bethany the Gospel of John says was called back to life four days dead. Names with that kind of story get kept. Cuba keeps it hardest: every December 17, tens of thousands walk to El Rincón outside Havana for San Lázaro, a devotion braided with the Santería spirit Babalú-Ayé. Mexico elected a president by this name, Lázaro Cárdenas, who nationalized the oil industry in 1938; Brazilian cinema answers with Lázaro Ramos, made famous by Madame Satã in 2002. The American record climbed from 79 boys in the 1910s to 1,342 in the 2000s; Brazil's census shows the steadiest kind of loyalty, between roughly 1,600 and 7,700 in every decade from the 1930s through the 2010s. A name about coming back that never quite left.
