Meaning
variant of Lily/Lillian, from the flower name, Latin 'lilium'
The story
Lillie is the flower dressed in Victorian handwriting, a spelling of Lily that flourished when flower names were the height of fashion. Behind it stands the Latin lilium, and behind the fashion stood a celebrity: Lillie Langtry, the Jersey Lily, was one of the most famous women of the late nineteenth century, an actress and society beauty whose name was everywhere just as American Lillies multiplied; the overlap is hard to ignore, even if it cannot be proved. The name entered the 1890s near its peak, then spent most of a century sliding as the ie spellings went out of style, bottoming out in the 1980s. The great flower-name revival changed its luck, and Lillie has been climbing again since the 1990s, trailing its sisters Lily and Lillian. An heirloom spelling with the petals intact is a rare combination.
