The story
Lisandro carries an ancient military name into a very different kind of conflict. Its Greek source, Lysander, belonged to a Spartan general and naval commander in the fifth century BCE. Xenophon's Hellenica describes him capturing most of the Athenian fleet at Aegospotami, with ships taken on the beach. The name combines elements for release or loosening and for man; Lisandro is its Spanish and Portuguese form. That history gives the name a life beyond the lover English readers meet in Shakespeare. In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Lysander and Hermia escape to the woods because their marriage is opposed. Puck's mistaken spell promptly sends his affections elsewhere, toward Helena, before the mistake is corrected and the couple reunites. The general and the lover are separate bearers of the same Greek name, not the same story. Across those settings, the sound travels from command at sea to the complications of an enchanted forest.
