Meaning
anglicized form of Lorcán, "little fierce one" from Old Irish lorcc "fierce"; borne by a 12th-century archbishop of Dublin
The story
Lorcan is Irish ferocity at crib scale: the source reads Lorcán as "little fierce one," Old Irish lorcc "fierce" wearing a diminutive suffix, though we note honestly that other scholarship calls the root's meaning disputed. The historical anchor holds either way: Saint Lorcán Ua Tuathail, the twelfth-century archbishop of Dublin who negotiated between the Irish and the invading Normans, and Dublin still claims him as patron. In America the name barely existed for most of the century, then surfaced exactly when Irish revival names did: 18 boys in the 1990s, 74 in the 2000s, 95 in the 2010s, 74 so far this decade. The accented Lorcán remains the Irish spelling; the plain one is how it travels. Fierce, small, and documented since the twelfth century: that is a lot of name for two syllables.

Not on the record in Spain, Mexico City, Argentina, Puerto Rico, New Zealand and Poland: those registries withhold small counts, so rare uses may sit below their floors.
Not on the Chile record: nametree keeps spellings that reached 5 registrations in some year, so rarer uses are not shown. Not on the Montevideo record for 1940 to 2011: that registry withholds nothing, so this spelling was not given there in those years. Not on the France record: nametree keeps spellings that reached 20 births in some year, so rarer uses are not shown. Not on Norway’s list: Statistics Norway lists only first names carried by 200 or more living people, so rarer names are not shown.
