Luiza
Meaning
famous in battle, traditionally (Brazilian spelling of Luisa)
Famously borne by Luiza Helena Trajano, who built Magazine Luiza into a Brazilian retail giant.
The story
Luiza is the Brazilian spelling of the feminine of Luís, from the Germanic Hludwig, traditionally read as famous in battle, and Brazil has given it several lives. It was steady mid-century, 24,393 born in the 1950s; it cooled through the 1970s; then it came roaring back, 50,260 in the 2000s and 74,447 in the 2010s, to a census total of 290,525 and a median age of nineteen, the country's 103rd most common name. Tom Jobim wrote a song called Luiza as the opening theme of the 1981 telenovela Brilhante, and Luiza Brunet reigned over Carnival as queen of the drums, first for Portela, then for Imperatriz Leopoldinense. The American record is small but points the same way: 344 girls in the 2010s, from almost nothing two decades earlier. Its sister spelling Luisa keeps her own page on this site; Brazil clearly has room for both.
