Also written Luísa.

The story

Luisa is the feminine of Luis, from the old Germanic Hludwig, traditionally rendered famous in battle, and Europe kept handing it to women worth painting. María Luisa de Parma wore it as queen consort of Spain, sitting for Goya in 1789; Verdi built an opera around one, Luisa Miller, premiered in Naples in 1849 from a Schiller play. The American record shows something rarer than fashion: presence in every single decade since the 1890s, never fewer than 105 girls in any of them, about 2,200 in the 2000s. Brazil is where it currently blooms: 105,342 in the 2022 census, median age thirteen, 31,643 of them born in the 2010s. A name that can wait a hundred years without fidgeting and then fill a Brazilian classroom. The battle in the etymology was apparently a siege.
