Meaning
my messenger
The story
Malachi means “my messenger” or “my angel” in Hebrew. The apparent name at the opening of the biblical book may really be a title or a writing name drawn from words within the text. Many scholars take that view; on their reading, the author’s personal name is unknown.
Scholars place the book around the fifth century BCE, among the Jewish community a few generations after the Babylonian exile. It challenges priests who neglect their responsibilities and people who bring inadequate offerings. Its criticism also reaches beyond worship to those who cheat wage workers or exploit people needing protection. Behind these complaints lies a weary question about why people who do wrong seem to prosper.
The book describes a messenger preparing the way and uses the work of purifying metal and washing cloth as images of change. Near its end, the promised return of Elijah is linked with parents and children turning toward one another. That promise comes with a warning of destruction if reconciliation fails.
Malachi entered English naming use after the Protestant Reformation, as a form of this older Hebrew name. Spanish Malaquías and Portuguese Malaquias preserve their own biblical forms. The related spellings carry the same name history, with different pronunciations and, in Spanish, an accent marking the stressed syllable.
