Mauricio is the Spanish form of Mauritius, says Behind the Name, the Latin name derived from Maurus, "North African, Moorish", and its anchor bearer is Saint Maurice, the third-century Roman soldier from Egypt whose legion was supposedly massacred for refusing to worship Roman gods, making him the patron saint of infantry soldiers. The American line climbed for a century, from about 61 boys in the 1910s to about 7,600 in the 2000s, with about 2,480 so far this decade. Brazil holds the name at national scale: about 215,800 Mauricios, rank 149 in the country, median age forty, with about 45,400 born in the 1980s.
