The story
Adrian began as Hadrianus, a Roman family name meaning from Hadria, an old Italian town whose name the Adriatic Sea traditionally shares. Its most famous Roman bearer was the emperor Hadrian, who walled off the northern edge of Britain, and its most surprising one may be Nicholas Breakspear, who took the name Adrian IV and remains the only Englishman ever to serve as pope. The name travels unusually well: Adrian in English and German, Adrián in Spanish, Adriano in Italian and Portuguese, Adrien in French. In the United States its strongest run has come in recent decades, a steady climb through the late twentieth century into the present, as Spanish-speaking and English-speaking families alike reached for the same sleek, cosmopolitan sound. Few names feel this current while carrying an emperor's passport.
