Melanie
Meaning
"black, dark," from melaina; two Roman saints carried it, France kept it alive, and Gone with the Wind's gentle Melanie introduced it to American parents. Soft, dusky, and warmer than its meaning
Goes by Mel
Famously borne by Melanie Perkins, co-founder and CEO of Canva.
The story
Melanie descends from the Greek melas, black or dark, through Melania, a name borne by two early Roman saints, a grandmother and granddaughter who gave away one of the empire's great fortunes. French speakers polished it into Melanie, and it reached English use by way of France, but its American life truly began with a book: Gone with the Wind arrived in 1936 with the gentle Melanie Wilkes as its moral center, and the name started climbing within a decade; no one can prove the novel did it, but the timing is hard to ignore. It rose steadily to a strong run in the 1970s, stayed comfortably in use afterward, and then delivered a surprise: its best decade on record turned out to be the 2010s, helped perhaps by how easily it travels between English and Spanish. Some classics simply refuse to finish their story.
