The story
Myles is the y-spelled twin of Miles, and its origin is honestly disputed: popular tradition links it to the Latin miles, a soldier, though scholars have argued over other roots as well. The spelling has deep American credentials, because the Pilgrims' military captain is usually remembered as Myles Standish, the Mayflower passenger charged with defending the Plymouth colony, made famous all over again by Longfellow's poem about his courtship. For a full century the name kept a low, steady murmur in the records. Then, from the 1980s onward, it began to climb, slowly and then insistently, and unlike many of its peers it has not stopped: Myles sits at its highest point yet in the 2020s and is still rising.
