Meaning
the beautiful one has come; famously borne by Queen Nefertiti, Great Royal Wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten
The story
Nefertiti means the beautiful one has come, and rarely has a name been so precisely fulfilled. Queen Nefertiti was the Great Royal Wife of the pharaoh Akhenaten in the fourteenth century BC, his partner in a religious revolution that turned Egypt toward worship of the sun disk, and possibly, some scholars argue, a ruler in her own right after his death. Her face became immortal almost by accident: the painted limestone bust unearthed at Amarna in 1912, now in Berlin, is among the most reproduced images of antiquity, serene, symmetrical, endlessly modern. Her actual fate remains one of Egyptology's open mysteries. As an American baby name Nefertiti registers only faintly in recent records, which feels fitting: it is less a name in circulation than a crown a family may, on rare occasion, take down from the shelf.
