Tatiana

from the Roman clan name Tatius; famously borne by Grand Duchess Tatiana Romanov of Russia

The story
Tatiana descends from Tatius, an ancient Roman clan name remembered through Titus Tatius, a legendary Sabine king. It might have stayed a Roman curiosity if not for Saint Tatiana, an early Christian martyr whom Russia took to heart: her feast day is still a students' holiday there, and the name became thoroughly Russian. Its most poignant bearer was Grand Duchess Tatiana Romanov, second daughter of Tsar Nicholas II, tall and dutiful, a wartime nurse alongside her mother, whose life ended with her family's in 1918. Americans discovered the name late: barely present in the records for most of the twentieth century, it began climbing in the 1980s, peaked around the 2000s, and still holds most of that ground today, a name that manages to sound both classically Roman and warmly Russian at once.
