Nelly is what affection does to Eleanor, Ellen, and Helen. In the usual telling, medieval English speakers took the El those names begin with, said "mine El", and heard "my Nel", the same merge that turned Edward into Ned and Ann into Nan; Nell then grew its own warm endings, Nellie and Nelly. The name's most famous modern bearer carries its travelling spirit in full: Nelly Furtado, born in Canada to parents from São Miguel in the Azores, was named for the Soviet gymnast Nellie Kim, whose surname became the singer's middle name. A medieval English pet form, worn by a Portuguese-Canadian star, honoring a Soviet champion: few names show so plainly how far a little affection can travel.
