The story
Niko can take you from Finland to a Georgian tavern without changing a letter. It is the Finnish form of Nicholas, and a short form used in Croatian, Slovene, Georgian and German. Within that wide family, one bearer left a world you can still look at: Niko Pirosmani, the self-taught Georgian painter. In Tbilisi, he painted signs for shops and taverns, using materials that included black oilcloth. His surviving work also holds a strikingly gentle animal scene. In Polar She-Bear with Cubs, the mother lowers her head protectively over two tiny cubs tucked by her front legs. The Nicholas family's old Greek meaning is "victory of the people." Pirosmani offers a particular image to remember alongside it: the lowered head, the small bodies, the careful space between them.
