Nikolas
Meaning
variant spelling of Nicholas, 'victory of the people'
The story
Nikolas is a variant of Nikolaos, the Greek, or of Nicholas, the English, and behind both stands the same name: Greek Nikolaos, "victory of the people", from nike, "victory", and laos, "people". Its anchor bearer is Saint Nicholas, the fourth-century bishop from Anatolia who, according to legend, saved the daughters of a poor man, became patron of children, sailors and merchants, and formed the basis for the figure known as Santa Claus. The k-spelling has its own American line: about 500 boys in the 1970s, about 1,950 in the 1980s, about 5,900 in the 1990s, about 7,800 in the 2000s, and about 2,560 so far this decade. Brazil counts about 8,400, median age eleven. A victory, a people, a legendary bishop, and a spelling that keeps the Greek k in view.
