Meaning

a medieval Castilian name, possibly from Latin nonus, 'ninth', or nunnus, 'grandfather'

The story

Nuño is medieval Castile distilled into four letters and a tilde. The references file it under Medieval Spanish, with an uncertain meaning: perhaps Latin nonus, ninth, or nunnus, grandfather. The history backs the vintage. Legend gives Castile two founding judges, one named Nuño Rasura; the well-documented Nuño González de Lara, called el Bueno, counseled King Alfonso X and died defending Écija in 1275. Portugal kept the cousin form Nuno alive. Nuno Álvares Pereira, the general whose victory at Aljubarrota in 1385 secured Portuguese independence, ended his days as a Carmelite friar and was declared a saint in 2009. Brazil's 2022 census counted 1,662 residents under that Portuguese spelling, Nuno, half of them under thirty. The figure documents Nuno in Brazil, not the distinct Spanish spelling Nuño. Two close forms share a page here, but the census keeps its own name.
