The story
Otávio is the Brazilian Portuguese form of Octavius, with relatives including Portuguese Octávio, Italian Ottavio and Spanish Octavio. Brazilian census history also shows a strong modern revival, so the old family name has a distinctly recent life in Brazil. The Roman name comes from octavus, "eighth," though that does not make every bearer an eighth child. One bearer passed through several names before becoming an emperor: he began as Gaius Octavius. After Julius Caesar adopted him in 44 BCE, he used Caesar’s name. He later took the name Augustus and became Rome’s first emperor, presenting his position through traditional offices and his standing as the Senate’s first man rather than as a king. Otávio leads past the imperial title to the earlier family name and forward again into contemporary Brazilian use.
