The story
Otávio is the name Rome's first emperor was born with: before he was Augustus he was Caio Otávio, as Portuguese tells it, a boy of the Octavii whose family name came from octavus, eighth. Two thousand years later the name belongs to Brazilian childhood. The 2022 census counted 132,191 people named Otávio with a median age of fifteen, and the curve tells the story of a revival: 15,754 born in the 1990s, 31,401 in the 2000s, 37,501 in the 2010s, good for rank 249 among the country's first names. The American record barely registers it, five letters that stayed home. The Roman family produced one boy who renamed himself an empire; Brazil returns the favor by giving his cradle name to schoolyards full of new Otávios.
