from Latin Octavius, 'eighth', traditionally given to an eighth-born child
The story
Octavio carries Rome's most practical naming habit. Octavius simply meant eighth, the way Quintus meant fifth, given to an eighth child or an eighth-generation heir, and history's most consequential bearer outgrew it entirely: Octavian took the title Augustus and became Rome's first emperor. The Spanish-speaking world kept the original warm. Its modern dignity owes most to Octavio Paz, the Mexican poet and essayist who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1990 and made the name synonymous with intellectual seriousness across Latin America. In the US the name grew steadily with Mexican-American communities through the late twentieth century, and US records show it peaking in the 2000s and easing since, which mostly means the parents who love it now get more of it to themselves. It wears its formality lightly, and its owner will rarely meet another.
