Meaning

"page," the young attendant learning a knight's trade, an occupational surname turned first name; it rose through the 1980s and 90s on one crisp syllable. Tailored, modern, and quietly medieval

The story

A page was the boy who served a medieval household, running messages and learning manners on his way, with luck, to knighthood; Paige preserves that occupation as a surname, and America turned it, with a certain irony, into a name almost entirely for daughters. It surfaced only occasionally in the records before midcentury, began stirring in the 1960s and 1970s, then rode the wave of crisp one-syllable girls' names, alongside Brooke and Blair, upward through the 1980s and 1990s to a peak in the 2000s. Television lent a hand near the top, with Charmed introducing its own Paige in 2001, though the name was already flying by then. It has descended gently since. Neat, quick and a little bookish, Paige still reads like the first line of a good story.
