Meaning
means 'pious' or 'devout'
The story
Pia carries the weight of an old Latin virtue in a very short name. It is the feminine of Pius, meaning "pious" or "dutiful," a word that became part of imperial and religious naming history. Antoninus Pius bore it as a cognomen in ancient Rome; later popes used Pius as their name. Pia carries the feminine form into languages including Italian and Swedish, with a life of its own beyond those male bearers. The Swedish football coach Pia Sundhage gives that European history a memorable Brazilian chapter. After taking charge of Brazil's women's national team in 2019, she told FIFA she was trying to understand samba's rhythm and hoped eventually to sing in Portuguese. The aspiration was still a work in progress. Beside the solemn historical associations of Pius sits this particular Pia, an experienced teacher becoming a learner of rhythm and language.
