Meaning

from the title "prince"

The story

Prince is precisely what it looks like: the royal title, from the Latin princeps, the first one, given by parents wagering that a child announced as royalty might live up to it. It kept a thin presence in the earliest American records, thinned further at midcentury, and its strongest run has come in recent decades. The reason is one man. Prince Rogers Nelson of Minneapolis, named for his father's jazz band, the Prince Rogers Trio, played nearly every instrument on his early albums, wrote Purple Rain, spent years performing as an unpronounceable symbol during a fight with his label, and died in 2016 as one of the most complete musicians pop has ever produced. The name's strongest stretch in a century has come during his fame and the years since his death; no one can prove the link, but it is hard not to notice.
