The story
George Harrison remembered needing about half an hour to be talked into it. Ravi Shankar had come to him with concern for refugees and an idea for helping; before their conversation was over, Harrison had agreed to take part. That exchange grew into the Concert for Bangladesh. In 1971, Shankar and Harrison organized two concerts at New York's Madison Square Garden to support relief for people fleeing East Pakistan into India. Proceeds went toward UNICEF's work. The scale is striking, but so is the beginning: one musician asking another to help. Ravi means sun in Sanskrit, a much older part of the name’s history. The concert began with concern voiced to a friend: a friend persuaded, then musicians gathering to do something useful together.
