Rodrigo can be hiding in plain sight inside Rodríguez. The given name helped produce that surname and has been recorded in Galicia since the eighth century. Its roots reach back through Latinized Gothic Rudericus to the Germanic name shared with Roderick, conventionally meaning famous ruler; Rodrigo is used in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Galician. One bearer is better known by a title: Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, El Cid. Here the name leads into two different kinds of history. The historical man and the idealized hero of the anonymous Cantar de Mío Cid are separated by roughly two centuries, the distance between his life and the poem. Rodrigo sits beneath both the familiar surname and the famous literary figure, giving us a reason to look again at names we thought we already recognized.
