Meaning

the Japanese term for a masterless samurai, literally "wave man"; as a given name it also overlaps with the Irish Ronan

The story

Ronin is the Japanese word for a samurai without a master, written wave-person, a man loosed like water from the order that held him, and history remembers its bearers at their best in the forty-seven ronin, who avenged their lord in 1703 and became Japan's great story of loyalty beyond employment. In Edo times the word carried real stigma, the warrior nobody vouched for; the baby-name books of our own era print the other half: self-possession, the sword that answers to itself. The scholars add a wrinkle: as a given name Ronin also runs together with Ronan, the Irish little seal, one letter apart and unrelated. The record reads modern warrior: about 1,400 in the 2000s, cresting at 4,800 in the 2010s, and 4,220 already this decade, on pace past it. Ronan keeps its own count at about 20,900. A name that means unattached, worn by a child everyone is attached to; the irony is half the charm.
