Samantha
Meaning
traditionally read as "listener," through Samuel's Hebrew root and an Aramaic path; as a name it is most likely an 18th-century American creation, Samuel's feminine with the flowery -antha ending. A beloved 1960s television witch set up its 1990s reign
The story
Samantha is traditionally traced to an Aramaic root meaning listener, though the name as we know it really flowered in America, in use as far back as the eighteenth century. For generations it remained an uncommon choice. Then, in 1964, television gave it a face: Samantha Stephens, the nose-twitching witch of Bewitched, charmed living rooms for eight seasons, and the name began climbing almost immediately. We cannot prove the show did it, but the timing is hard to ignore. What began then kept building for thirty years, and Samantha peaked in the 1990s, ranking among the most popular girls' names in the country and holding strong through the 2000s. It has eased gently since, settling into familiar-classic territory: recent enough to feel warm, established enough to feel safe.
