Meaning

alternate transcription of Shamim, from Arabic shamim, 'fragrance, scent'

The story

Shameem is an alternate transcription of the Urdu name also written Shamim, says Behind the Name, which also notes the Bengali form; behind them stands the Arabic shamim, "fragrance, scent". The double-e spelling is one of several ways the same name reaches the Latin alphabet, and each transcription keeps its own line in any ledger that counts spellings. The published American record carries no Shameem line at all, in any decade, and Brazil's census returns nothing under this spelling either: the name's life is lived in South Asia and its diaspora, largely outside the records this site can count. A word for fragrance at the root, two scripts behind the Latin letters, and an honest blank where the American numbers would go.
