The story
At Shiloh, a child hears his name and keeps going to the wrong person. The place lay in Ephraim; the Ark of the Covenant and tabernacle remained there from Joshua’s time through Samuel’s. In the biblical account of the young Samuel, the sanctuary lamp is still burning when he thinks the priest Eli has called him. Eventually Eli understands and teaches him how to answer; Samuel’s reply offers to listen. Shiloh is the place in this scene, a Hebrew name whose etymology remains uncertain, possibly "tranquil". The word in a separate Genesis passage is disputed too, so a neat, definite meaning would conceal more than it explains. Its chapter closes with Samuel recognized as a prophet and the Lord appearing at Shiloh, the setting where he learned how to answer the call.
