Meaning
Short form of Dorothea and Theodora, both meaning "gift of God"; also a short form of Theresa.
The story
Dorothea and Theodora perform a quiet switch. Both use the Greek elements doron, "gift," and theos, "god," but put them in opposite order. Both are traditionally understood as "gift of God," and both can become Thea. The shorter form keeps a connection to either arrangement without carrying the whole compound. That makes the familiar-looking pair more interesting to set side by side: the shared meaning survives the change in order, and the same short name can emerge from each. Thea also has another documented route through Theresa, whose meaning is uncertain. That route gives the name a wider family than the gift-and-God pair alone. A person called Thea need not have any longer legal name, but the short form opens onto several longer histories, including two that exchange their elements and still arrive at the same meaning.
