Meaning

ruler of the people (French form of Theodoric); famously borne by Thierry Henry

The story

Thierry is the French descendant of Theodoric, an ancient Germanic royal name meaning ruler of the people, worn by Frankish kings before France was France. In modern memory it belongs above all to Thierry Henry, the elegant striker who won the 1998 World Cup at twenty, became Arsenal's all-time leading scorer, and fronted the unbeaten Invincibles season of 2003 and 2004. He later played in New York and became a familiar coach and broadcaster in America, so a generation of US soccer fans knows the name by heart. American babies, though, almost never received it: US records show essentially nothing across more than a century, with only a first trace appearing in the 2020s. That leaves Thierry in rare company, a name millions can recognize and almost no American child carries, which for some families is exactly the point.
