Meaning

“'outer space' in Turkish, a word coined in 1937 and adopted as a given name”

The story

Uzay means outer space in Turkish, and the word itself has a birth certificate: it was coined in 1937 by the Turkish Language Association, the body that rebuilt the republic's vocabulary, on the root uza-, to stretch, to extend. The dictionary then lists Uzay as a given name in its own right, which is the whole etymology: a country invented a word for the cosmos and parents took it home. Turkey supplied a bearer worth remembering: Uzay Heparı, composer, producer and actor in Sezen Aksu's circle, who died in 1994 at just twenty-four. Neither the American record nor Brazil's census publishes a count for Uzay; Brazil omits names below its publication threshold. That is silence in the tables, not proof of zero people. Most celestial names borrow a star or a moon the ancients already named; Uzay skips the catalog and simply takes the whole sky.
