The story
Vivienne reaches "alive" by a precise route: the French form of Viviana, feminine of Latin Vivianus, from vivus. Arthurian tradition also used Viviane, Vivien and Vivienne for the Lady of the Lake, giving the name a literary life long before the runway. Vivienne Westwood’s work offers another lively way to think about old things returning to use. She and Malcolm McLaren helped shape London punk clothing with torn-looking garments, chains and safety pins. Their first catwalk collection, Pirate, then reached into a different wardrobe. For Autumn/Winter 1981, they drew on seventeenth- and eighteenth-century silhouettes and portrait paintings, showing broad striped trousers, oversized shirts and sashes. It is an appealing turn in the story of a designer associated with punk: portrait paintings becoming part of a catwalk collection. Beside those clothes, the name’s old root invites a light comparison: a past form can remain recognizable while being given something new to do.
