The story
Sylvie's forest connection runs through an older Roman name family. The French and Czech form of Silvia, it reaches back through the feminine of Silvius to Latin silva, "wood" or "forest." Roman legend places Rhea Silvia at the beginning of another family story, as the mother of Romulus and Remus. She is a legendary bearer, rather than a documented starting point for the name itself. Gérard de Nerval later gives Sylvie a life on a smaller scale in his story of that title. The narrator remembers her working lace bobbins; on a later visit, she is making gloves and explains the device that holds the leather for sewing. They also walk through the forest. The ancient woodland root remains, but the woman in the story has moved beyond the narrator's memory: from lace to leather, with work of her own to describe.
