Meaning
diminutive of William ("will helmet"); for generations of American girls too, standalone or short for Wilhelmina
The story
Willie, the ageless pet form of William, will and helmet at the root, was once among the commonest names in America: through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries it stood near the top of the records, often given as the full name rather than a nickname. And not only to boys: Social Security's own decade tables count 12,357 girls named Willie in the 1900s and nearly 24,000 more in the 1930s, standalone or short for Wilhelmina, a Southern tradition that gave the blues its Big Mama, Willie Mae Thornton, whose Hound Dog came three years before Elvis's. The century wore it down slowly, decade after decade, until it became an uncommon sight on new birth certificates. Which makes its most famous bearer all the more fitting: Willie Nelson, the braided Texan who broke Nashville's rules, made Red Headed Stranger, wrote On the Road Again, co-founded Farm Aid, and played his battered guitar, Trigger, into legend, still touring into his nineties, as durable as the name once was. Willie today is far rarer than in its heyday, an heirloom name whose long slide says nothing about its warmth. Somewhere, someone is always singing about one.
