The story
Xiomara's roots remain uncertain: it is possibly a Spanish form of Guiomar. A much more distinct picture comes from Elizabeth Acevedo's novel The Poet X. Xiomara Batista is a Harlem teenager, the daughter of Dominican immigrants, who puts her frustration and passion into a leather notebook. She has plenty to say, but her mother expects her to follow the church's teachings. An invitation to her school's slam-poetry club turns a private activity into a possibility of public performance. Xiomara worries about her mother's reaction, yet keeps thinking about saying her words aloud. Her refusal to remain silent gives the name a vivid literary association: a girl deciding how much of her inner life she is ready to let other people hear.
