Meaning

traditionally the Kikongo name for the Congo River and former name of the nation; embraced as a proud African place-name in Black American families

The story

Zaire is a river before it is anything else: the Kikongo nzadi o nzere, river swallowing rivers, the name the Congo carried and the name the nation wore from 1971 to 1997. The American record begins exactly where that history does, about 80 in the 1970s, the decade the country took the name, then 1,100 in the 1990s, 2,700 in the 2000s, 3,200 in the 2010s, and already 3,700 so far this decade, past the full 2010s with years to run. Black American families made it a given name and kept it one after the country renamed itself, which tells you what the choice holds: not a flag, a river. In our records it goes to boys about 9,500, with about 1,400 girls carrying it too. A place-name, a water-name, and a statement of scale.
