In rabbinic tradition, Yohanan ben Zakkai escaped a besieged Jerusalem by pretending to be dead. His students carried him out in a coffin, because the guards would not let the living leave. Brought before the Roman commander, he asked not for a palace but for Yavne and its sages, a place where learning could continue after catastrophe. The story comes from the Talmud, not a modern eyewitness report, and its details belong inside that frame. It gives Zakkai an unforgettable association with preservation through study. Modern Zakai may be related to biblical Zaccai or Zakkai, but the naming route is marked uncertain; a similar spelling is not proof of a single straight lineage. That caveat makes the story stronger, not weaker. We can keep the possible connection and still tell the truth about it: one name has an ancient textual family nearby, with a coffin, a school, and a future saved in memory.
