Meaning

work, industriousness; famously borne by Queen Amélie of Portugal, the country's last queen consort

Also written Amélie.

The story

Amelie is the French form of Amalia, an old Germanic name rooted in a word for work, and it carries a sense of quiet industriousness beneath its soft sound. Its royal bearer is Queen Amélie of Portugal, a French princess who married King Carlos I and became the country's last queen consort; when assassins attacked the royal carriage in Lisbon in 1908, killing her husband and eldest son, she is said to have fought back with the only thing in her hands, a bouquet of flowers. In America the name barely registered for most of a century, then rose noticeably in the 2000s, just after the 2001 French film Amélie charmed audiences everywhere; we cannot prove the connection, but the timing is hard to ignore. It has climbed further since, while staying uncommon enough to feel like a discovery.
