Meaning

form of Celina, related to Latin caelum "heaven"

The story

Celine is the French Celine, from the Roman name Caelina, feminine of Caelinus, which comes either from the family name Caelius or straight from Latin caelum, heaven. It sits in US records from the 1890s onward, quietly, never more than about five hundred girls in a decade for its first century. Then the 1990s arrive and the count jumps roughly sixfold in a single decade. Celine Dion's recording of The Power of Love spent four weeks at number one in early 1994 and became the best-selling single by a woman in America that year. We cannot prove one caused the other. But a century of flat numbers followed by a sixfold jump in the exact decade a singer named Celine became inescapable is about as clean as this kind of evidence gets. The part people miss: it never fell back. The 2020s are its highest count yet.
