Meaning

ash tree meadow

Goes by Ash

Famously borne by Ashley Fiolek, the American motocross champion who raced deaf.

The story

Ashley began as an English surname for families who lived near an ash-tree meadow, and its career as a first name began with boys: England took it up after 1860, likely in honor of Anthony Ashley-Cooper, Earl of Shaftesbury, and Margaret Mitchell gave it to a man, Ashley Wilkes, in Gone with the Wind. Then America changed the name's mind. Girls pulled ahead of boys in 1964, a glamorous Ashley arrived on The Young and the Restless in 1982 just as the surge was building, and by 1991 Ashley stood at number one for American girls, even as Britain went on giving it to sons. It is one of the great gender flips in naming history, accomplished within a single generation. The meadow, for its part, never asked whom it belonged to.
