Ashton carries an English place name into a surname and then a given name: its Old English elements describe an ash-tree settlement. As a given name, Ashton appears on the athletics track, carried by the American Olympic decathlete Ashton Eaton. At Rio 2016, he came third in the decathlon’s concluding 1500m race and won overall gold. The decathlon adds points from ten track-and-field disciplines across two days, so the final race has to be read alongside everything that came before it. Eaton spent the opening laps in fifth before moving to third on the last lap. His combined score tied the Olympic record and secured his second consecutive Olympic decathlon title. The finish line belonged to one race; the gold measured the whole competition.
