The story

Bento is Portuguese for Benedictus, blessed, worn by way of Benedito and carried by São Bento himself: Benedict of Nursia, who founded Monte Cassino in 530, wrote the Rule that organized Western monastic life, and was declared patron protector of Europe in 1964. Philosophy kept a copy too: Spinoza was Bento in Portuguese, Baruch in Hebrew, Benedictus in Latin, all three meaning blessed. The name's present tense belongs to Brazil, where the 2022 census found a median age of six: 731 Bentos born in the 1990s, 10,020 in the 2010s, and 14,713 so far in the 2020s, already past the full decade before it with years to spare. The American record opened its own Bento column only in the 2010s, 38 boys, then 132 in the current one. Fifteen centuries of blessing, suddenly in a hurry.
