Braxton is an English surname drawn from an old place name, read by most scholars as Bracca's settlement. Expectant parents may already know it from Braxton Hicks contractions, the practice contractions named for the Victorian doctor who first described them. As a first name it barely registered in American records for a century, then jumped in the 1990s, right as Toni Braxton's voice was everywhere on the radio; we cannot prove the connection, but the timing is hard to ignore. The name also fit its moment perfectly: two punchy syllables ending in n, at ease alongside Jaxon and Paxton in the new wave of surname names. The curve crested in the 2010s and has eased only slightly since, leaving Braxton a firmly modern choice with an unexpectedly long English pedigree behind it.
