Meaning

from an English place name and surname; meaning uncertain

The story

On William Camden’s Westminster Abbey monument, his left hand rests on Britannia and his right holds a pair of gloves. The book commemorates work he fitted around the school calendar. As a teacher at Westminster School, first Second Master and later Head Master, he spent holidays travelling to collect antiquarian and topographical information. Britannia, his description of Britain and Ireland, appeared in 1586. The place-name later traveled onto a Baltimore map: Oriole Park at Camden Yards opened in 1992. Camden itself comes to given-name use through an English surname drawn from a place name, with an uncertain meaning. For a surname bearer devoted to describing places, that geographical beginning offers an apt association without supplying a neat translation. The book beneath his hand is the tangible result: school holidays turned into a description of places beyond the classroom.

Not on the Montevideo record for 1940 to 2011: that registry withholds nothing, so this spelling was not given there in those years. Not on the France record: nametree keeps spellings that reached 20 births in some year, so rarer uses are not shown. Not on the Austria record for 1984 to 2025: Statistik Austria publishes every first name down to a single birth, so this name was not given there in those years (before 2010 the record covers babies with Austrian citizenship only).
