Breno is the Portuguese form of Brennus, a Latinized Celtic name or title whose meaning remains uncertain. Suggestions include "king," "prince" and "raven," but none is settled. Its Brazilian life is much younger than its ancient frame: census evidence shows broad modern adoption, with bearers concentrated in recent generations. The older figure is easiest to picture in Plutarch’s later account of Rome and the Gauls. After the Roman defeat at the Allia and the entry into Rome, Brennus agrees to withdraw for gold. When Romans object to the weights, he adds his sword and belt, increasing their burden. Plutarch gives him the answer "woe to the vanquished," a phrase the writer says became proverbial. The story turns an argument about measurement into a demonstration of who gets to hold the scales.
